Best of Fashion Week Street Style: Paris

Latest trends

Paris is always an exciting place to be. Most especially during fashion week, of course. The City of Lights and Romance Capital of the World turns into a runway filled with the best street style looks from the European and international fashion elite. Everyone who’s anyone, and anyone who’s lucky enough to be invited to the shows pulls out all the stops and shows off all the sartorial tricks up their sleeve for Paris Fashion Week.

New York is urban. London is a little bit rebellious. Milan is sensual sophistication. Paris is all about making a unique statement clothed in a whole lotta glam. Here are the best looks and coolest trends I’ve spotted:

Leather and Lace

Leather and lace is one of those unusual fashion combinations that totally works. It’s tough gal meets modern romantic, girly meets punk. The marriage of these two materials almost always result in stunning looks. Paris fashionistas take it up a notch with unexpected silhouettes and daring hemlines.

Patent Animal Skin

Animal prints are pretty much wardrobe staples at this point. Take your love for animal skin to a more exotic and flamboyant level with the patent animal skin trend that positively ruled the Paris streets come fashion week. This trend isn’t for the faint of heart, but if you’re bold enough, you’re a shoo-in for the most stylish in the room. Just ask Anna Dello Russo.

Sleek and Sophisticated

Black is the ultimate in sleek and sophisticated. However, you can expect a little bit more from Parisian stylistas when it comes to styling this reliably chic color. From adding emerald green cropped biker jackets, adding a blazer for a menswear twist, and donning this eponymous color in its most alluring form–in leather, black is a go-to color to look chic. All these looks are proof that black is far from boring.

Sparkle and Shine

Embellishments like sequins and feathers need not be confined to evening wear. In fact, Paris fashion week street style has redefined evening wear and made it into everyday wear. Hey, if you have the confidence and panache to rock a fully embellished evening frock during the light of the day, then go for it. Parisian fashionistas are known to make their own rules after all. Only one rule applies: always be fabulous.

Printastic

Not just all about florals and stripes, Paris Fashion Week showed us an array of eye-popping prints that have a definite “shock and awe” value. Graphic black and white geometric lines, textured chevron with a sheen, and layered bohemian prints are just some of the print combinations that you should try for yourself.

Je ne sais quoi

Je ne sais quoi means “I don’t know what.” That’s the literal meaning. When one says ‘je ne sais quoi,’ it is used to describe someone’s desirability that stems from something intangible, something you can’t quite out your finger on. Paris Street Style has “je ne sais quoi” to a T. There is just something magical, and borderline otherworldly about the fashion choices that you are inspired to make whenever you find yourself in Paris. I mean, just take a look these amazing looks below. Giovanna Battaglia’s bell-like sleeves, and inexplicable lime green on lime green ensemble that surprisingly works, fur plus striped marsala–these are looks that look right at home on the trailblazing streets of Paris.

Top 10 Must-See Fashion Movies

Latest trends

Fashionistas and style aficionados always, always look beyond the runways, magazines, internet, and social media for inspiration. Movies, films, and documentaries provide us fashion lovers unique and in-depth insight into the industry and creative expression that we all love so much. Any serious fashionista will tell you that they oftentimes find inspiration in movies, and they often find themselves learning new things and getting educated on the finer points of design, personal style, and fashion history.

Consider this list your starter guide into fashion movies. Grab some popcorn and brace yourself for a bevy of amazing inspiration. Here are my top 10 picks for must-see fashion movies:

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

You can’t really leave this classic film off this list. Audrey Hepburn basically invented the “little black dress” we all know and love in this movie. Hubert de Givenchy designed all the looks in this movie, and it is all stunning.

Bill Cunningham New York

Before there was The Sartorialist, Tommy Ton, and Street Peeper, there was Bill Cunningham. The New York Times photographer is a legend within the industry and can certainly be credited for singled handedly bringing street style into the main stage.

The September Issue

Vogue is considered by most to be the fashion Bible. This documentary takes the viewer through the whole process of putting together Vogue’s eponymous September issue. Even better is the glimpse we get into Anna Wintour’s personality. You’ll find yourself falling in love with Grace Coddington too.

Scatter My Ashes At Bergdorfs

Bergdorf Goodman in Manhattan is certainly a big player in the fashion industry. This department store only carries the best of the best, and their store is one of the most important fashion institutions. You will love how this film shows how the put up their legendary shop windows, and you’ll enjoy hearing about the celebrity shopping anecdotes too.

Clueless

90s fashion is having a huge moment right now. Clueless definitely fits right into that. From the plaid kilt minis to the kooky statement hats, there is so much style inspo to be had. Not to mention, Cher’s AMAZING closet.

Valentino: The Last Emperor

If you’re in a style rut, you will fall in love with fashion all over again when you watch Valentino: The Last Emperor. Valentino is in love with beauty and glamour, and at the end of this film you will be swept up in the romance of fashion.

The Devil Wears Prada

Andrea Sach’s makeover is just way TOO GOOD. The montage of Andy’s new outfits is probably the best part of this movie.

Advanced Style

One can only hope to have even some of the chutzpah, confidence, and style sensibilities of these colorful and vibrant ladies whose unapologetic style has them feeling and looking forever young.

Coco Before Chanel

Chanel is one the most prestigious fashion houses at the moment. It is also one with tremendous history. Coco Chanel was a fashion revolutionary, who blazed a trail for women to wear whatever they want. Her designs were modern and it was firmly against the established corsets and restrictive skirts of the time.

Sex and the City

Now while Sex and the City 2 had some stellar style moments (their outfits for karaoke were unforgettable), Sex and the City still wins for the iconic looks that were like a throwback to the signature style of the show. This movie also started a lot of trends, like the gladiator heel and the oversized statement belt trend.

Which movie will you be watching this weekend? Why not gather your girlfriends and have a marathon? So much fun!

Any fashion film favorites that I missed? Share them to me in the comments section!

Magical Skyscraper Land: Hong Kong

Latest trends, Personal

Hi guys,

You have probably noticed from my Instagram that I recently went to Hong Kong for the first time ever. It was a short trip, but it certainly didn’t lack in anything.

So here are my tips for what to do in Hong Kong.

IMG_0971

Hong Kong is just a short fight away from Singapore, making it a prime spot for any city lover residing in Singapore.

IMG_0978

I had to take this huge suitcase with me for all those new and cool things I was gonna buy in Hong Kong. And yes, this was very clever!

Tip number 1: Bring an extra suitcase

Hong Kong was always at the top of my list and so I was super excited to go there. Cant say I started planning for the trip far ahead, it was all very last minute.

All I knew was that I had to try local food, check out the malls and walk around Hong Kong for as long as it takes to form an opinion of this awesome city.

Getting there was fast and easy. The airport is as efficient as Changi and there was no taxi queue so we literally walked right into a cab. And I gotta say it didn’t take long to impress me. All those green tropical hills, islands and light fog was quite enchanting. I love the feeling of space in general, but this just seemed like another planet. The skyscrapers hiding behind the hills, endless bridges, islands, I felt like I was high above the ground even though I was in a cab.

Tip number 2 – do take a cab from the airport, you wont regret it.

Another thing that struck me was construction work everywhere. I am not complaining here, I just didn’t expect to see as much road works and construction sites. Hong Kong is definitely still growing at a really fast pace.

IMG_1212

As we got closer to the hotel, it felt much more like a city and less of a magical skyscraper land. We stayed in Central area. Boasting more mirrored glass skyscrapers than I could possibly imagine, Central is paradise for the modern architecture lovers as well as members of the skyscraper appreciation society like myself. LOL

The area also has a lot of restaurants and shopping malls. So plenty to do here.

IMG_1304

IMG_1299

Waking up to this view felt truly magical.

My tip number 3 – if budget allows, stay in Central

and enjoy what it has to offer. I loved how everything was walking distance (relatively speaking). I enjoy walking and the weather was perfect so we walked all around Sheung Wan and Soho areas.

Navigating around a new city is always a pain, so our first stop was a 7-eleven. Got the SIM cards, activated a data package and off we went.

Tip number 4 – get a sim card and stop yourself from getting lost!

We got ours in a 7-eleven inside one of the metro stations (MTRs).

First things first – I really wanted to see Sheung Wan and Soho. Partly because of the history of the areas, partly because of convenience we went there first. I gotta say it is a very eclectic place. Just a crazy mixture of everything. Imagine walking down the road and seeing a traditional chinese medicine store next to a designer boutique, then a calligraphy store and then a deserted shop and an expensive restaurant. I was constantly like “What the hell”. In other words: unpredictable, must see, quirky, do not take it too seriously.

IMG_1201

IMG_1136

IMG_1121

Tip 5: walk around Sheung Wan and Soho. Wont take long, will no doubt surprise you.

If you are a big fan of shopping malls and just cant get enough, you should definitely try IFC. It is a lot of walking, a lot of designer stores, the biggest high street names as well as an unusual amount of mid range stores, which are so rare. You will need deep pockets if you want to buy several pieces here, but if you have saved up for a quality piece this is a perfect place.

IMG_1537

IMG_1131

If you have a day or more to spend on shopping, you should head straight to Tsim Sha Tsui or TST. This whole area is basically one giant shopping mall, incredible variety of items, lots to see and just an incredible experience all together. Miles and miles of walking in and out different stores will definitely tire you out, but hopefully you will pick up some awesome stuff along the way.

IMG_1356

Tip 6: wear your most comfortable shoes. They are your best friends in HK.

If this is still not enough shopping for you, try Times Square and the surrounding area. I found a lot of quirky Japanese items in this area 🙂

IMG_1504

IMG_1343

In terms of food Hong Kong is no doubt a paradise. With so many amazing restaurants to choose from, we were really lost and decided to go with some recommendations first.

Mott 32 was amazing. I love the dark lounge atmosphere and it is always nice to be escorted to your table by a beautiful hostess.

IMG_1141

The food was delicious, modern Chinese is the best I can describe it, traditional flavours with a modern spin, well presented and delicious. Had crispy duck and these little pork and cucumber rolls.

IMG_1144

A very romantic place, perfect for a date with your loved one.

IMG_1143

Now the next place was really quite something. I wanted to try local food from the start and what is better than a traditional tea house? One of the oldest ones in Hong Kong – Lin Heung Tea House in Wellington street. It was definitely an experience…first of all you kinda have to wash your own cups and chopsticks here. Secondly, you have to speak Chinese to order. Thirdly, all tables are large and round and so you have to just join people at their table. Only locals here, I haven’t noticed a single tourist. The food is all worth it though, the pork soup was delicious, the egg noodles where the best I had, dim sum was full of flavour too.

IMG_1158

Tin Lung Heen was another restaurant we tried in Hong Kong. Couldn’t resist having crispy duck again and of course tried the dim sum too.Screen Shot 2015-12-19 at 12.16.49 PM I have to say this place is a bit overrated, the food was not as amazing as TripAdvisor promised, but the view from 102nd floor was to die for.

IMG_1526

IMG_1475

IMG_1377

I have to say my favourite thing about Hong Kong is the view at night. Paired with some cocktails and a cheese platter it is truly unbeatable.

IMG_1540

IMG_1202

IMG_1516I will be back soon!

Holiday Beauty Series: Party-Ready Nails

Latest trends

‘Tis the season for holiday parties, reunions, and get-togethers. If you’re bracing yourself for the party season heading your way, I come bearing gifts–in the form of a holiday beauty trend guide that is.

In the sea of cocktail dresses, of course, you’d want to set yourself apart right? A standout ensemble isn’t your only way to get noticed and remembered, your holiday beauty look will score you major points and make your look one to remember as well. From your tips to your toes, I’ll give you some trends that you should try to elevate your look for the holiday parties to come. I’m sure that you’re going to rock each trend like the true trendsetter and fashionista you are.

I’m going to start my holiday beauty series with the party-ready nails that’ll finish off your look with a trendy flourish. Here are my top picks for nail trends this holiday season:

Shattered Glass Nails

If punk rocker chic is your aesthetic, shattered glass nails is the trend made with you in mind. I love the futuristic and edgy feel it gives, and it will truly take your LBD to new heights, especially when paired with chrome rings and/or bangles or cuffs.

Metallic Half-Moon

Forget French tip, when you rock the metallic half-moon nail trend on your digits, you’re earn second looks for sure. Metallic colors are a guaranteed hit for party ready holiday beauty, since the sheen already puts you in the festive mood. Taking your metallic colors into a half-moon design adds to the fashion forward feel of your look.

hbz-the-list-holiday-nails-13 Image from Harper’s Bazaar

Get The Blues

Now, reds and pinks might be your safe and easy bet, but you should consider bright and vibrant metallic or frosted blue hues to accentuate your holiday looks with. Just don’t pair it with a matching blue eyeshadow to avoid looking too 80s or over-the-top.

fall_winter_2015_2016_nail_trends_blue_manicure Image from Fashionisers

Goldfinger

Deck your digits out in the gilded brilliance of gold glitter and metallics. There’s nothing like gold nails to spell instant glam for your look. If you’re decking your digits in gold, avoid wearing bold accessories in your hands and arms and instead opt for thin and delicate pieces.

hbz-the-list-holiday-nails-03 Images from Harper’s Bazaar

Glittering Nail Beds

This season, your cuticles are getting more attention as far as nail trends go. Too much glitter can read juvenile so a little sprinkling of glitter on your nail beds is a great way to add some sparkle to your mani, while maintaining a sophisticated aura.

hbz-the-list-holiday-nails-06

Modern Lines

For a mani that stands out and truly goes the distance, get geometric with it. Modern lines and abstract art-inspired tips really hint at your inner fashion renegade. What’s great with this trend is you can choose more muted colors if you’re more conservative, and bolder colors if you fancy yourself a beauty risk taker.

10 Ways to Wear Fur

Latest trends

The fall/winter season means that fur is back in vogue. Not that it ever went out of style, that is. Fur is always chic, but of course, it’s more appropriate to don it during the colder months. Regardless of whether there’s winter in your area or not, fur is still a glamorous wardrobe piece that you should consider investing in. There is simply so many ways to style and wear fur!

Here, I’ve handpicked 10 amazing ways to wear fur. Read on for 10 ways to style different fur looks:
0eaaa3ba357b125b22a98ff60cbd3d53

Don’t limit yourself to just fur outerwear. Fur accessories, just like this scarf, can instantly make you more lush and luxurious. Rule number one: you don’t need to dive full on into a trend, sometimes dipping your toe in with a statement accessory is all you need.

3a6ef7181210dee7df0c8be3b747cdb7

Fur spells glamour and sophistication. So it becomes even more sartorially interesting when you pair it with something so laidback and casual like denim. This unexpected texture pairing works so well together. 4da6fbd32ea4d3d9a0345262c3e35441

Boho looks can definitely benefit from fur, since it enhances the 70s feel of your look. Broaden your horizons beyong neutrals and be bold with multi-colored shaggy fur.

7e8d71f31bf1006f7dcc3573f083ace2

One of the most wearable ways to wear fur prominently is a fur vest. If you live in warmer climates, this is your best bet in wearing fur. A fur vest gives the right amount of warmth and rich texture for those chilly nights. This piece is also so easy to dress up or dress down. You can get so creative with the styling! I particularly love styling this fur vest with button-downs. So simple and chic!

56da9b982c2885b3103b5afd6afc706d

Blame Karl Lagerfeld and Fendi for every fashionista’s newfound obsession with fur keychains. More than just something to adorn the it bag you’re rocking, fur keychains make a statement that you’re up to the trends. 67bcda287d246681a10f34fd324f48db

Fur stoles are definitely vintage inspired. Drape over both your shoulders or play with asymmetry by just placing it to one side, either way a fur stole gives your ensemble more old world elegance and sophistication. Go monochromatic, just like this look above, or you can use it to accent your look.14345af0b46ffbd9145109ca74bd34dc

A fur hat is a low maintenance and cool girl way to get some fur into your personal style. What a great way to, no pun intended, cap off any winter look! Don’t forget to finish off your brows to complement your oh-so-luxe head gear.

Add some more flourish and fun into your clutch game. Opt for an oversized fur clutch in a rich jewel tone, this accessory will kick up a cream-colored sweater or even a plain white tee.

A brown fur coat is just CLASSIC. And as they say, you can’t beat a classic. Increase the Kate Moss feel of this piece when you wear your brown fur coat with motorcycle boots, ripped second skin denim and wide brim hat. This is London street style at its best. s-chem-nosit-yubku-solntse-31

Leave it to Blair Eadie of Atlantic Pacific to style fur in the most uniquely refreshing way. Worn over a denim top and cowhide print skirt, you can plainly see how wearable and versatile fur can be. Pair your fur stole or scarf of choice to an animal print for a more exotic feel. This look screams “Call of the Wild.” I love.

Best of Fashion Week Street Style: Milan

Latest trends

Milan street style is a different kind of animal. If London is punk, New York is urban, Milan is eclectic meets sophisticated. I love how fashion week really gives fashion lovers an opportunity to delve into street style around the world. There’s so much to learn about style from the streets, and every year it just gets more and more exciting.

Italian women have long been heralded as one of the most stylish and elegant in the world. It’s high time we take notes from Milanese street style and adopt some of that “la dolce vita” into our personal style and wardrobe. Here are my top picks for the best in street style and top trends in Milan for fashion week Spring 2016:

Shoe Love

Italy is all about shoes, we all know that. The love for shoes runs long and deep in Italian culture and style, and Milan being the fashion capital of the country is the perfect stomping grounds for shoe lover from all over the world. Here are some snaps of some the most beautiful shoes this side of street style. Take note of the dominance of those bright blue shoe hues. Gorgeous!

Bold Color

It’s easy to just wear neutrals all year-round, but sometimes going bold on color will go a long way. Keep your bold hues rich and jewel-toned to maintain that sophisticated Milan flair.

Squad Goals

I saw a lot of stylish women in two’s and three’s in Milan. Whether fully coordinated in hues of camel and black, decked out in dreamy white flowing tops, or in complementary outerwear, these ladies know that when it comes to street style your whole squad can make an impact.

Back to Back

Italian women pride themselves in a unique sense of style that departs from mainstream trends. Make an outfit feel even more unique and individual when you add unpredictable elements to your look. Make them look twice with back detailing that shows that you think about the overall 360 effect of your outfit. From back cut-outs to playful patch designs to even a button down worn in a whole new way, when you put your back into it, your style reaches a whole new peak.

Italian Heritage

Missoni and Gucci are just two of the many illustrious fashion houses that call Italy their home. Get inspired by these heritage brands and sport some the signature Missoni colorful print or invest in some quality Italian leather to upgrade your ensemble of the day. Nothing like a beautiful piece of high quality Italian leather work to give your look an air of luxury.

Expect the Unexpected

If there is one takeaway from Italian street style that you should integrate into your own style, it’s this: always leave room for sartorial surprises. Ballgown in the daytime? Why not? Hiking boots with a mini shirt dress? Oh yes. A cascading train worn with jeans is always a good idea. It’s in these unexpected pairings that you can truly find your one-of-a-kind style sensibility.

Best of Fashion Week Street Style: London

Latest trends

London is the capital of the more subversive side of the fashion coin. Designers like Alexander McQueenGareth Pugh, and Vivienne Westwood all call London their home, cementing the city’s status as a place where rebellious and unconventional fashion are born. More than that, London has been the hotbed for such historical and industry changing fashion trends such as mod and punk fashion. You can’t mention London without mentioning Savile Row, of course. Savile Row is the eponymous area in London, which is known for producing the best menswear and tailoring in the world.

For Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2016, fashionistas stormed London in their sartorial best. But what I loved the most is how their own style became transformed and/or influenced by the signature style of this city. I’ve noticed some key London trends in the street style spotted, and here they are:

Mad for Plaid

Plaid and Tartan is for the Scots, I know. But it’s a huge part of London Style too! Especially when worn from head-to-toe and accentuated with large Mod-inspired sunnies, plaid is so chic and feels so very now.

Dashing and Dapper

Savile Row is famous the world over for their impeccable menswear tailoring. This legendary London fashion landmark definitely influences women’s wear too. Various incarnations of suiting styles, ranging from the quirky to the classic, has shown up on my street style radar and I am in love with how menswear suiting can be interpreted into women’s trends and styles. Putting a feminine or modern twist to a classic suit is always a great way to get dressed.

Prep School

London is home to a lot of preppy style as well. Classic jumpers and school girl skirt silhouettes are an essential part of preppy fashion. Refresh those two pieces for 2015 with oversized jumper silhouettes and alternative skirt fabrications like leather. You can also co-opt some school girl style into your wardrobe with Peter Pan collars, white socks worn with heeled oxfords, and overalls, of course.

High Street meets High Fashion

You can’t mention London without thinking of its storied high street brands such as TopshopRiver IslandMiss Selfridge, and New Look. These eponymous brands has inspired a legion of London fashionistas to embrace high street trends and marry it with their high fashion sensibilities. Think of trendy fur vests, playful clutches, and gold metallic belts paired with the latest designer pieces of the season like Celine sunnies, Jil Sander sunnies and Balmain jackets.
