The Full Report on Nicki vs. Miley

“Miley, what’s good?”

Those fighting words from Nicki Minaj were heard all around the world last Sunday night during the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards.

The potential for drama was high that night. Between Nicki vs. Taylor Swift, Taylor Swift vs. Kanye, there definitely was tension in the air. We just didn’t expect that sparks would fly between Nicki and Miley.

If you missed out last Sunday and were not able to watch, or if you simply live under a rock, here’s the video of what went down during  the awards show between Nicki and Miley:

Phew. That was intense right?

Other people were crying, “Staged!” But most sources (and even Nicki herself) declares the authenticity of this moment. This beef and this heated exchange wasn’t staged and it wasn’t an act. Just look at Miley’s genuinely shocked expression on the video. This was a direct result of an earlier interview that Miley did where she made comments about Nicki Minaj’s concluded Twitter beef with Taylor Swift.

Here’s a brief recap if you’re still clueless.

Last July, Nicki Minaj called out her lack of video of the year nomination for Anaconda. She stated that because she wasn’t white and skinny, her pop culture phenomenon chart-topping song and video was snubbed. Taylor Swift took offense and thought it to be a pointed tweet to her, but Nicki denied that it was meant for T-Swizzle and they ended the misunderstanding quickly. I mean, they did perform together during the VMAs.

So there’s no bad blood there.

A mere days before the VMA Awards, which Cyrus was slated to host, Miley’s comment regarding this whole Nicki vs. Taylor issue was published.

Miley Cyrus said, “If you do things with an open heart and you come at things with love, you would be heard and I would respect your statement. But I don’t respect your statement because of the anger that came with it … What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind. It’s not very polite.”

Wow.

Obviously Nicki Minaj did not take to Miley’s comment kindly. AT ALL. A lot of people, Nicki included clearly, that Miley’s comment was way too personal and basically stereotyped Nicki as an angry black woman.

As she came up onstage to receive the Best Hip Hop Video for Anaconda, she then called out Miley.

That anger is real.

So whose side are you on? Are you Team Nicki or Team Miley?

One thing is for sure though, their confrontation aside, both ladies served up provocative fashion on the red carpet.

Nicki and Miley can certainly serve up some exceptional red carpet sexiness though.

Katy Perry has so many chart-topping hits, worldwide sold out tours, music awards and accolades, magazine covers, and memorable videos under her belt. She is definitely one of the most popular faces and voices in the music industry today.

More than her infectious songs, Katy Perry has also proven herself quite the style influencer and chameleon.

Aside from her awe inspiring costumes on tour and while performing, Katy has consistently expressed her vibrant and provocative personal style every single time she steps out. The best part about her style is its uniqueness and unpredictability. You never know what style move she’s going to show next. Here’s a quick look at Katy Perry‘s best style moments:

Graffiti chic during the Met Gala, Katy Perry achieves a red carpet coup yet again with this Moschino spray painted gown with matching spray paint can bag. So fun!

Dressing up in Coachella the way only Katy Perry knows how, this irreverent and romantic lace cream frock is just the unexpected style choice that we’ve come to see from Katy. The extra long pearl necklace and ribboned headband sweeten the deal too.

Hitting the Grammy red carpet in all blue. Literally blue from head to toe, she matches her beautiful embellished down with her blue ‘do. The powder blue hue is ethereal and an off-the-beaten path choice for the red carpet but it works.

Blue seems to be Katy’s color. This time around, her bright cobalt blue is made even better by its leather material and sheer embellished paneling on the top. The thin ribboned belt at the waist is also a nice touch. Those shoes might be a step too far though, they have this weird “doll” vibe that seems out of place here. Simple nude suede or leather pumps would look much better.

Katy’s ever changing hair color is one of her signature style accessories. Resplendent with purple hued locks, her nude peek-a-boo dress shows off her amazing curves in style. I love how she let the dress take center stage and kept the rest of her look simple, incredibly sexy.

Provocative and high fashion, this red carpet look from Katy is one of my favorites. It’s almost Madonna-esque in its uniqueness. The embellishment overload works in her favor. This is my favourite look for her, it is very grown up, somewhat traditional, very luxury and at the same time has playfulness and youthful vibe added by those sleeves.

Katy Perry’s shoot for Wonderland Magazine is further proof of her chameleon-like characteristics. I mean, how great does she looks with red hair and full bangs?

Multiple colored feathers and multiple straps on the back, can you get any more couture than that? I love the matching bleached brows and blonde sleek hair too! I don’t think I would recognise her like this.

Another proof that blue is Katy’s color. Love that oversized ribbon.

Long, poker straight hair complements the beautiful print of this column gown. The print has got me ooh-ing and aah-ing.

Jennifer’s simple and sophisticated style is something that every girl wants to imitate. A breezy chiffon print top with wide leg trousers and a leather saddle bag is the perfect outfit to achieve everyday chic. 

Looking for some cold weather style inspo? Jen’s got it. The cuffed distressed jeans, the wide brim hat, the striped tee layered underneath a ribbed sweater and scarf are all the definition of uber style. I love the brown boots against all the black and blue.

Straying from her usual black, this pastel blue Vivienne Westwood dress has drapery that hug her curves beautifully.

You can’t go wrong with an LBD, but Jen puts a little twist to this evening staple with a leather obi-inspired belt and oversized leather clutch. Leather makes everything better.

On the cover of Vogue Deutsch, she exudes the classy gait of the modern woman. I love this red trench she dons on the cover. Not to mention her enviable pout.

Now onto the style… Rosie Huntington-Whiteley‘ style has been well-documented and widely admired for good reason. She simply exudes an effortless sophistication with just the right hint of sexy. Her style is something to be inspired by, for sure.

A green glitter column gown with strategic cut-outs looks amazing on Rosie. What makes this look even more stunning is her adorable shoulder length bob. s is how you dress up for a star-studded Vanity Fair party.

This is such an adorable take on retro dressing. Vintage print, knee-high suede boots, and round sunnies spell instant mod style.

A canary yellow draped dress makes her look every inch of the goddess she is.

All white gets more exciting with a fuzzy white texture. It really all about texture, ladies.

Rosie’s standout style really shines when she’s in transit. Want proof? Just look at this polished ensemble.

Ladylike yet still sexy, that’s one of the ways you can describe Rosie’s style. A form-fitting mini with a blush pink blazer is classically feminine yet modern.

She also has contracts with brands like Juicy Couture, Joe Fresh, and Lacoste as well as with high fashion houses like Oscar de la Renta, Chanel, and Dior, to name a few. A quintessential part of Taylor Swift‘s girl gang (Karlie was in the recent Bad Blood video), Karlie’s star is at its pinnacle, and the way things are going, she’ll be one of the supermodels of our time.

How gorgeous does Karlie look in her new Versace campaign? Green with envy. Literally.

Madonna has long been noted for her ever-changing looks. A true fashion chameleon, she has gone from fashion rebel in the 80s, sultry leather clad vixen in the 90s, avant-garde style maven in the 00’s, and finally to sophisticated glamazon. Her fashion line, Material Girl, with her daughter, Lola has been hugely successful and a testament to her fashion prowess. She is a true quadruple threat, Madonna is a singer, dancer, actress, and designer. A true style icon.

Here are some of my favorite Madonna looks:

Green fringe, Veronica Lake inspired waves, and a bold red lip spell Old Hollywood glam. But the armful of bangles on each arm say modern and edgy.

Pictured with her gorgeous daughter, Lola, Madonna goes back to her 80s roots with sexy lace and fur.

I am simply in love with this satin embellished gown! Such a departure from typical red carpet glam.

Who can pull of this menswear inspired outfit better than Madonna? No one. Gotta love those diamond encrusted gloves.

Clad in Versace, Madonna shows off her yoga-toned bod while dripping in jewels.

A frequent collaborator of famous photographer duo, Mert and Marcus, Madonna wows once again in this Marilyn Monroe inspired shoot.

Another Mert and Marcus collaboration for Interview Magazine, this photo is an update of her style back in the 80s. I love those stacked chain arm candy!

Mert and Marcus are incredible when capturing Madonna’s verve and unique energy. This shoot for her MDNA album is like a throwback to the time of Gaultier bustiers and Vogue-ing. I love it!

CFDA Awards 2015 Report

Kim Kardashian’s fire emergency aside, this year’s Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards was full of fashion inspiration and sartorial surprises. Celebrating the very best of fashion design, the CFDA Awards this year did not fail to amaze and to provoke a deeper love for the industry and it’s creative minds.

But before we get to the awards part of the evening,let me bring you some choice red carpet snaps of my personal picks for best dressed.

Shayne Oliver,the designer behind hip and happening brand Hood By Air, won the Swarovski Award for Menswear.

If you haven’t heard of Mansur Gavriel, you’re not a true fashionista. The covetable minimalist bucket bags from the brands are must-haves for It girls everywhere. Floriana Gavriel and Rachel Mansur, the creatives behind the brand, won the Swarovski Award for Accessory Design.

Kanye West presented Pharrell Williams with the Fashion Icon Award. He completely deserves it. His recent collaboration with Adidas is proof of his design acumen and style savvy.

The night wouldn’t be complete without a Betsey Johnson split. The fun and forever young designer won the night’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and stayed true to her playfulness by repeatedly breaking out her splits throughout the night.

Natalie Portman’s beauty is understated and elegant. Her grace and carriage point to the grandeur and old world glamour of Old Hollywood. She’s conquered this century’s Hollywood too though. Starring in award-winning heavy hitters like Closer and Black Swan, as well as blockbuster hits like Thor, V for Vendetta, and Star Wars as Queen Amidala. This Harvard graduate is proof that beauty, brains, talent, and impeccable style is possible to have in one petite and sophisticated package.

Here’s my roundup of Natalie Portman’s best looks to date:

Normally, a frock with ruffles all over would be a no-no for someone with a petite frame like Natalie. However, this red number from Lanvin makes an exception. All the ruffles are beautifully layered and draped making it an effortlessly elegant and incredibly flattering red carpet look. The short hemline is perfect for her frame. 

Natalie shows off her penchant for rosy hues in this pink and red jewel-toned gown. Her classic style is reflected in her great choice of subtle yet glamorous diamond bling. She kept it simple, and yet she made a super chic statement.

Maternity style proved to be Natalie Portman’s strong suit. She wowed the crowd during her pregnancy by donning one amazing dress after another. The beautiful deep purple color, sexy slit, and off-shoulder silhouette enhance her beautiful figure and show off her baby bump in high style. 

Further proof that you can’t go wrong with black and white? This flawless daytime ensemble from Natalie Portman. The sleek and feminine black satin slingback heels and delicate diamond drop earrings are the perfect finishing touches to her stylish frock. When you have a great dress like this, you let it do the talking.

Great style never takes a day off. Natalie look good even when sporting some off-duty casual threads. Blue jeans, a camel trench, and Cuban heeled boots gets elevated with a strong shot of color via a cobalt blue cashmere scarf. This is how you bundle up while still looking chic as ever. 

Clad in head-to-toe Dior, Natalie represented  the brand well. She is a Dior brand ambassador after all. From the tweed coat, cashmere sweater, and the beautifully embellished silk satin skirt, the mix of textures is what makes this outfit stand out. 

One of her best Oscar looks and a noteworthy red carpet moment, Natalie Portman commanded attention in this Dior Haute Couture gown. The vintage feel, fitted bodice, classic Old Hollywood polka dot print all came together for an evening look that exceeded expectations. 

A perfect picture of feminine style at its best, Natalie Portman continues to impress with her polished and ladylike style. The embellished floral tulle overlay of this fit and flare tea length dress makes it perfect either for a red carpet event or an afternoon at high tea. She finished it off perfectly with gold vintage inspired sandals. Natalie tried her hand at subtle color blocking when she combined this bright and vibrant royal blue with a pair of deep purple peep toes. She showed off her gorgeous gams and flattered her petite frame with the short hemline and A-line silhouette of this frock. The origami bust detail combined with the tailored detailing in the buttoned front and pockets are features that make this dress a stellar standout.

Having transformed before our eyes from Disney pop princess into a bona fide fashion insider, her recent collaboration with Jeremy Scott is further proof of her fashion prowess and unique style sensibility. She can go from red carpet glam to high street brash and bold fashion in a snap. This is what makes her so exciting, what Miley wears is always a clear reflection of her mood and where she is in her life. It is so transparent and simply thrilling to watch and observe. Let Miley inspire you to take fashion risks and wear things you never thought you would. Buck tradition and break all the rules while keeping chicness top of mind a la Miley.15

Miley does tailored in this red carpet look. Her cutting edge and modern take on the pantsuit involves bright yellow athletic piping and a mandarin collar top with sheer paneling. Wearing a black bra underneath a white top is a very Miley move that shows she’s no red carpet rookie. She can turn even a fashion faux pas into a moment of chicness. 

You wouldn’t expect to see Miley in a Canadian tuxedo (read: denim on denim look), and yet here she is pulling it off excellently and putting her own twist to it, of course. The long white talons, royal blue minimalist sandals, and her spiky bleached blonde hair are outfit add-ons that are so Miley.

A matching full tea skirt and crop top make for a ladylike ensemble. However, black and white perforated mesh detailing add a definitely daring spin on the matching set trend. I also love how Miley styled this look simply, opting to let these striking separates take center stage and keep the accessories and beauty look at a minimum.

This casual street style look is signature Miley. Youthful, playful, and fun, the Converse sneaks, oversized white tee and flannel shirt combo is a little bit country and a little bit rock n’ roll. Just like Miley. Layered and chunky gold bling, a messy top knot, oval sunnies, and a black leather studded carryall  make this the quintessential young Hollywood pavement pounding outfit.

This is the look that best captures Miley’s style of the moment. A little bit more grown up and polished, and plenty more fashion forward, this monochromatic look has elements of street like a leather motorcycle jacket and chunky heeled creepers that blend with classic black pieces for a stunning evening look.
