Trend Report: Japanese-Inspired Fashion

Latest trends

This 2015 a lot of designers looked to the East for inspiration, specifically Japan. The land of the rising sun definitely has no shortage of beautiful landscapes, unique art, and cultural heritage and history to draw from. Designer runways, from Alexander McQueen to Tibi, prominently featured design details directly drawn from Japanese culture and tradition.

I love how designers translated Japan’s heritage into wearable and fashion-forward pieces that every woman would love to wear. I, for one, would love to own something Japanese-inspired. The East meets West aesthetic is just so modern to me. Here is my take on Japanese style for Singaporean designer Silvia Teh. Click here for the full fashion spread that I previously blogged about. Here are some of my favorite looks from the shoot:

There are 4 styles that characterize this trend: origami detailing, tied/obi belts, kimono silhouettes, and japanese print motifs.

Silvia Teh’s design certainly reflect all 4 of those trends. I mean, how amazing is that wave print on the jacket? I also loved that navy kimono vest tied with an obi belt as well as the piece with an origami ribbon detail around the chest.

Here’s a closer on look on the 4 key pieces that comprise this hot trend:

Origami Details

Architectural and sculptural folding details are being integrated into runway looks this season. Instead of dressing up your clothes with jewelry, why not be progressive and opt for origami detailing that lends your look a futuristic yet sophisticated appeal? Margiela’s approach interprets origami via silhouettes that emulate origami’s stark folds and calculated proportions.

Kimono Style

Probably the most wearable out of all the Japanese-inspired fashion trends, kimono styles easily translate from one season to another. Keep an eye out for exaggerated sleeves, billowy fabrics, and wraparound silhouettes. What’s great about kimono styles is that it’s flattering to most figures and can be styled for either casual outings or fancier events.

Tied/Obi Belt

To look more in the know, swap out your leather and metallic belts for fabric belts that you can easily tie around your waist. It adds an air of chic nonchalance to your look, and it feels so on trend. You can choose thicker or thinner bands depending on your figure. If you’re looking to make more of a bolder statement, look for the full-on wide obi belts.

Japanese Print Motifs

Be on the lookout for vintage-looking Oriental flora print or ancient art inspired prints. It’s patterns like this that will make you stand out head and shoulders over the fashion pack. Consider this the more high fashion alternative to your typical prints.

Bohemian Babe

You don’t have to be by the beach to look the part of a beach babe. Let your hair down in loose waves and spritz some salt spray on them. Let those lustrous locks graze your tanned shoulders in these off-shoulder flouncy tops. Remember that the 70s are back on trend and with it the bohemian fashion movement is also having a moment. These playful and breezy off shoulder tops also come in cropped tops if you want to show more skin. Accessories to consider pairing with your boho tops are: Panama hats, fringe cross body bags, gladiator sandals.

Itsy-Bitsy

There are some parts of the world (like Singapore) that have summer-like weather all year round, which means you always gotta be swimsuit ready. Some parts of the globe, on the other hand, are just starting summer while other parts still have end-of-summer festivities to look forward to. No matter the season, there’s always a reason to keep your eyes peeled for the hottest and trendiest bikinis. You never know when you’ll be needing one for a spontaneous weekend beach getaway or for your best friend’s pool party. Key trends you should watch out for when bikini shopping are: color blocking, halter top silhouettes, macrame/crochet details, and sexy cut-out maillots.

Take the Plunge

Deep-V necklines and cleavage baring tight boydsuits a la Kim Kardashian  are all the rage this season. These sleek pieces are so sexy and fashion forward. Trust me, this will make your blue jeans extra sexy for that next night out. Accentuate your cleavage with a sweep of bronzer and accessorize with a long necklace or trendy body chains.

Leg Up

Super high to the slits or double slits are a great way to show off those gams. Instead of a micro mini dress or skirt, why not opt for these instead? These have more drama, trust me. These high slit skirts are also an exceptional way to show off your statement footwear in style, just look at how Miranda Kerr does it. For a definite cool girl factor pair these skirts with fringe ankle boots.

So flaunt that bod you’ve been working on all summer long, and show off a sliver in skin in style. These clothes may be freeing and provocative, but their trendy and modern silhouettes still keep them looking chic and sophisticated.

Fashion Bipolarity

Latest trends

Do you enjoy fashion extremes just like I do? I am so guilty of dressing the complete opposite of what I did the day before. You should definitely let your mood of the day dictate what you’re wearing sometimes, it just makes fashion and dressing up even more exciting since it’s so unpredictable!

I wore this embellished striped top previously with a blush pink midi skirt, and now I take more of a youthful approach with a huge amount of street style rebel vibe.

_DSF7819

This look really goes to show how versatile stripes can be, girly and feminine one day, and rock n’ roll the next. I kept the same beauty look, did you notice? The dark red lip matches this look perfectly as well.

_DSF7821

_DSF7823

How much am I loving the grunge rock feel of these printed slip-on sneakers? Again, this is further proof of how opposite I can be with my style. I do love my heels, but there are days when nothing can beat an edgy pair of comfy sneaks.

_DSF7826

These jeans are so comfortable that I can actually surf in them! City surf, that is. Jeans are so great for traipsing about and having urban adventures.

_DSF7834

But what makes this look so amazingly rugged and chic? The ripped denim, of course! I love the ripped denim trend because it just lends that undone glam to your casual look, and if you choose to dress it up with something sparkly for the evening, it looks just as chic. The boyfriend fit of the jean makes this pair extra trendy and of-the-moment.

_DSF7838

_DSF7840

I used the same fuchsia YSL nano cross-body bag in this look, and it works just as well. The structured shape of the handbag works to make this look feel a little more put together, and a little less rugged and slovenly. And it is an excellent pop of color too, since this outfit is mostly dark tones.

_DSF7845

_DSF7849

This ensemble really makes the embellishment on the tee stand out, a brilliant spin on the denim and tee casual dressing. So take that tip to heart, a little bling on your T-shirt goes a long, long way into glamming up your daytime look.

_DSF7853

_DSF7857

Everybody should always have time for funny faces in between #OOTD shots right? I enjoyed this look too much! Isn’t it amazing when you can use one piece in two very different ways? It simply goes to show that any piece can be versatile when you let your creativity rule.

So, which look would you go for: laidback rock chick or dainty femme? Let me know!

Skirting the Issue

Latest trends

I always fall in love with basic pieces that have a little bit of a twist to it. We all love stripes, and we all have it in our closets. It’s easy to mix and match with other items, and it isn’t too plain to be considered boring. I particularly love the interesting cut and bat wing sleeves of this striped casual top. Not to mention, its eye-catching cabochon crystal brooch-like embellishment. It’s such a vintage inspired detail! How can I not fall in love? It’s like it was calling out my name!

This outfit is part one of my styling series. Watch out for my next post, I’ll show you a totally different way to style this striped top.

For now, let me tell you why midi skirts should be your next wardrobe investment.

_DSF7639

When in doubt, skirt the issue. Skirts are an easy pick for me during those days when it’s too balmy out, but I still want to look ladylike and well put together. Breezy and flowing skirts are the answers to your summer sartorial problems. If you’re tired of wearing denims, then consider midi skirts your new best friend for the spring/summer season. What’s even better is that midi skirts are on-trend, and when styled appropriately can be worn to more formal functions as well due to its conservative length.

_DSF7580 _DSF7605

A bright red cross body bag is a match made for a black and white striped top. It is a nod to the nautical feel of stripes, and gives it a more graphic pop. This handbag also matches perfectly with the color of the heeled sandals.

_DSF7624-2Notice the tortoiseshell on the platform and heel of my sandals? Isn’t that such a great little detail? It adds an earthiness to this look and contrasts it with the girliness of the textured blush pink midi.

_DSF7633

The key to this unexpectedly chic color story? The rule of three. The three major pieces in my look, my skirt, shoes, and handbag, all belong to the same rosy pink hued color family, which allows the black and white stripes to stand out even further.

_DSF7670 _DSF7675

The dark red lip is a great contrast to all the rosy tints, don’t you think? I enjoy making a statement with my lip color. It really does make a big difference. Another outfit element worth noting is the cinched waist, emphasizing your curves and your shape is always best.

What did you think of this outfit? Where would you wear it to?

Top 3 Runway Trends

Latest trends, Reviews

Here I am again, giving you the cure to your Singapore Fashion Week hangover. If you’re on the lookout for new pieces to refresh your wardrobe and put some more pizzazz into your personal style, look no further than the runways of the recently concluded, wildly successful Singapore Fashion Week 2015. This year’s crop of designers was brimming with so much talent and we have definitely taken notice of their designs and their inspirations as well. There was so much creativity and great ideas on the runway this season, we’ve definitely got more than enough to last us until the next fashion week.

Trendspotting during Singapore Fashion Week was so much fun! It was an amazing experience to see how different minds translated and interpreted the trends of our time. Here’s my quick rundown of the top 3 trends on the Singapore Fashion Week runway:

1. Bohemian with an Edge

Can I really do a trend roundup without including Thakoon? This international design superstar definitely lives up to his stellar reputation with his collection. The 70s bohemian fashion movement has certainly been a major trend player lately, and Thakoon presented his own take on the boho style and spirit.

Knee-high gogo-inspired boots in bright red, lightweight mock turtlenecks, and vintage frame bags sashayed down the catwalk. With an earthy color palette of burnt orange, navy blue, brown, and beige, Thakoon stayed true to the decade but put his own twist, of course. Embellishments, flowing pleated skirts, and athletic stripes were modern details that elevated his 70s look.

2. Japanese Inspired

Inspired by one of the ancient cultures of Asia, there were lots of Japanese inspiration on the runway. Textiles from the region and obi belts abound. Ong Shunmugam’s cruise collection featured intricate Japanese textiles beside menswear-inspired pinstripes. Styled with super trendy white sneaks, the juxtaposition of the stripes with Japanese prints and patterns is the new go-to print on print for stylish it girls. This is definitely an ensemble that you should cop, it’ll make for a double tap worthy #OOTD.

Silvia Teh, the winner of the Harper’s Bazaar New Gen Design Award, also took a cue from Japanese culture and fashion. Teh also used stripes, but in a different way. Graphic, solid and thick stripes adorned her creations with girly schoolgirl skirts and elegant satin fabric finishes.

3. Tailored Minimalism

The minimalist trend has been going strong for years now. Two designers made standout collections featuring this trend, Dion Lee and Velda Tan’s Collate The Label.

Dion Lee’s ultra chic and slightly futuristic netting details beautifully offset his stark and forward thinking designs. With a neutral palette accented with jewel tones, Dion Lee showed off his incredible tailoring skills with an array of curved sleeve cuffs, structured shoulders, and strategic cut-outs.

Velda Tan’s Collate The Label cemented her place in the Singaporean fashion scene with her collection of sporty yet luxe wear. I loved her black, white, and pastel color palette. It was so on-trend, and it is so perfect for dressing stylishly in the tropics. The curves and sharp angles interspersed within each of her pieces is a beautiful sight to behold.

Best of Singapore Fashion Week 2015

Latest trends

Singapore Fashion Week may be over, but there’s still a lot of inspiration we can draw from it. There were so many exceptional shows and I met so many amazing people. You’ve probably seen a lot of runway reviews by now, but here are the best of the best. It’s quite a tough task given all the talented designers and stunning shows we witnessed. Read on for my picks for the best shows during this year’s Singapore Fashion Week.

Best New Designer: Collate The Label by Velda Tan

What’s great about Singapore Fashion Week is getting to know new labels and seeing the great work of up-and-coming designers. Velda Tan, the creative and innovative mind behind Collate The Label, certainly distinguished herself during Singapore Fashion Week with her modern, minimalistic, and luxurious approach to women’s wear. The Collate The Label runway show generated a lot of well-deserved buzz and earned itself a loyal fashion fan following. Here are some snaps from the show:

Billowy wide leg pants, and matching coats in neutral tones were a hit on the runway. Structured dresses with feminine details like peplum and pastel colors were also key trends.

Best Atmosphere: Harper’s Bazaar Asia New Generation Show

I love young talent! There’s just a different energy and an elevated sense of excitement when young talent showcase their distinctive aesthetic on the runway. Harper’s Bazaar certainly provided these designers a great platform to make their creative visions come to life. Fashion designers from all over Asia were represented. Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore all had representatives who showed their designs on the Singapore Fashion Week runway. I absolutely loved everything about Silvia Teh’s designs. She is such a hardworking talent and it is always a pleasure to see such amazing people win.

Best Clothes: Victoria Beckham

Among all the stellar shows, one stands head and shoulders above the rest, and that is the finale Singapore Fashion Week show by Victoria Beckham. The certified style icon and bona fide fashion mogul flew in to Singapore as part of her Asia tour, and her collection definitely didn’t disappoint. Fashion fans got the understated elegance and modern glamour that they were expecting from Posh’s namesake label. Victoria Beckham’s collection showed off beautiful tailoring with impeccable detailing like intricate folding patterns and men’s suiting details. It was to say the least, nothing short of perfection, the ultimate collection for the modern woman who loves and lives fashion.

One of the standout pieces from the show, a structured gray frock with origami-like waist detailing and large buttons and a tailored silhouette.

The Classics

Latest trends

There are some pieces that every woman needs to have in her wardrobe, a classic white button-down shirt is one of them. Crisp, clean, and timeless, this top is a must-have for any chic closet. I love its versatility and the elegance it conveys in its simplicity. You can either opt to wear it to the office, to cocktail hour, a coffee date with your best friend, or even to a casual day out. That is precisely the beauty of plain white button-down tops, you have the freedom to dress it up or dress it down as you wish. The styling options are infinite! It is only your imagination and creativity that will limit the ways you can wear this classic shirt.

Take a look at how I styled this style staple in two different ways, and perhaps you can gain some inspiration on how to wear it yourself.

Look #1

Cinching your waist in with another classic, a slim leather belt, upgrades this white shirt even further and makes the silhouette more feminine and ladylike. This waist detail perfectly matches the traditionally girly silhouette of the brocade full knee-length skirt.

_DSF7443

_DSF7445

_DSF7472

To make this feminine ensemble look even more graphic and modern, add black accents like these patent black pointed pumps. Another contemporary sartorial classic to add to your wardrobe.

_DSF7476

Don’t forget to finish off your look with statement accessories that pack some major wow factor, a stunning quilted leather Chanel bag and a striking pearl ring ought to do the trick nicely.

_DSF7504

This first look is simply made to go from office to post-work drinks. It is polished and glamorous with the right hint of trends to tie it all together.

Look #2

For my second look with this crisp white shirt, I chose to clinch my waist once again and highlight my shape. This time around though, I used a bright pink color, which is ideal to match this beautiful and summery Singapore weather.

The white top acts as the perfect contrast to all the bright colored pieces I chose to coordinate with this outfit. The white is the ideal color to balance these brights and make them work together harmoniously.

The subtle yet on trend pink printed skirt adds visual depth to this ensemble and matches to the pink belt and handbag to a T. I also love the sophisticated pencil skirt silhouette!

_DSF7552Accessories can make or break an outfit, and these add-ons simply make the skirt stand out even more. The yellow flats acts as a brilliant color contrast to all the pink, while the mini YSL satchel gives it a shot of trendy style.

Look #2 is made for weekend dates, but can just as easily be adapted to more formal occasions.

So, which look do you prefer? I love them both so much! It is so hard to choose!

#Fashion Steps Out 2015 Part 2

Latest trends

Can’t get enough of Singapore fashion? Here’s part two of my Fashion Steps out 2015 experience.

As the night went by, the runway show just kept getting better and better. The creative genius and innovation of the designers involved in this show is simply astounding, and what’s great about it too is that each designer has such a unique perspective adding even further to the thrill of this annual event.  Whether your personal style is decidedly more feminine or if you’re maybe more of an edgy chic with modern sartorial sensibilities, Fashion Steps Out 2015 has you covered. Orchard Road was filled with infectious love for fashion and amazing energy that night! If you were lucky enough to be there, you’d know what I’m talking about. If not, here are more images from Fashion Steps Out 2015

Francis Cheong

Capturing high glamour to a T, each dress that designer Francis Cheong sent down the streets as a red carpet winner. If you’re looking for inspiration for your next formal event, look no further. Cheong’s collection marries Hollywood glam with ladylike silhouettes and details for gowns that are sure to land you on the best dressed list. I especially love the tulle ball gown with floral embellishments, that dusty pale pink color is to die for.

Moiselle

Check out my previous post on Moiselle’s Spring/Summer fashion show, and you’ll understand why I simply love this brand. Each design is made to flatter a woman’s shape and the silhouettes are both traditionally feminine while conveying a definite modern vibe at the same time. This collection that walked down on Orchard Road has that same magic. Vibrant prints and a predominantly pink collection makes this an easy pick for your summer wardrobe.

Germain

Huge balloons carried by statuesque models down the runway/street exude a playful mood that offsets the crisp and clean tailoring of Germain’s collection. Strategically placed cut-outs, sheer peek-a-boo panels, and contrast pockets and lapels take Germain’s designs a step further. Classic with a twist, Germain is for a woman who is going places wants to look chic while doing so.
